ArtSci Roundup: Drive-In at On the Boards, The Engine Room Residencies: The Black Tones, and More

During this time of uncertainty and isolation, find solace in digital opportunities to connect, share, and engage. Each week, we will share upcoming events that bring the UW, and the greater community, together online. 

Many of these online opportunities are streamed through Zoom. All UW faculty, staff, and students have access to Zoom Pro via UW-IT. 

Sports & Civil Rights History Panel

Join the Department of History on Zoom for a conversation between historians, athletes, and sports leaders about the role that sports has played in civil rights movements throughout U.S. history. This panel will take a deep dive into the history of sports and civil rights, featuring perspectives from historians Lou Moore (Grand Valley State University) and David Leonard (Washington State University), sportswriter Dave Zirin, and sports figures Seattle Storm co-owner Dawn Trudeau and Mariners player Braden Bishop. This panel will be moderated by UW Professor of Sociology Alexes Harris.

Creative Resonance: Bonnie Whiting, “Re-imagining Performance:  Musical Connection in a Time of Social Distance”

Dr. Bonnie Whiting, Chair of Percussion Studies and Assistant Professor of Music, presents a talk sponsored by the School of Music on music-making in student and professional ensembles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on the opportunities and challenges presented by low-latency music programs, streaming platforms, socially-distanced live performances, outdoor events, and asynchronous recordings, Whiting gives a virtual tour of experimental music practices presented by UW students and alums.

On the Boards and the Henry Art Gallery are pleased to co-present a screening series. Curated by the Henry, this multi-evening event features work by various artists who use moving images to respond to colonial mentalities and tactics, from surveillance to capitalism. Drawing from existing and imagined spaces, each of these artworks employ sound and movement to generate potential worlds and futures.
Please join us for these unique viewing experiences. In recent years, the OtB parking lot has been a badminton court, a beer garden, and throughout May, it’s an outdoor drive-in movie theater!

The Engine Room Residencies: The Black Tones

The Henry Art Gallery is excited to welcome The Black Tones for the first of three artist residencies that activate Gary Simmons: The Engine Room. The Black Tones will bring their blues- and punk-based practices to the Henry throughout the month of May. We invite you to visit the gallery and experience the band’s process while they are rehearsing, writing, and experimenting in the space.
