Statement on leadership change for the Washington National Primate Research Center

UW News

After careful consideration, the University of Washington ended the appointment of Dr. Michele Basso as Director of the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC), effective May 31. Her scientific leadership and contributions to neuroscience are appreciated, and Dr. Basso will continue her work as a core scientist in the Center.

Dr. Deborah Fuller is serving as Interim Director. Dr. Fuller, a professor of microbiology in the UW School of Medicine, has been serving as the Associate Director of Research for the WaNPRC since 2021. She has over 30 years of research experience in vaccines and nonhuman primate models for infectious disease. We are confident she will provide steady leadership and guidance during this period as we work toward identifying a new director for the primate center.

This change in leadership was made in the best interests of the Center and in support of its long-term success. The UW has and continues to stand behind the Center’s mission, its cutting-edge research made possible only through its nonhuman primates and its scientists and staff.
