Internet privacy and other emerging technology issues focus of 24th annual UW Computer Fair March 18-19
The oldest and largest technology show in the Pacific Northwest is just around the corner. The 24th Annual UW Computer Fair, which attracts up to 16,000 visitors, will be held March 18 and 19 at th e University of Washington. This event features over 160 exhibits of the latest computer technology and services including networking, computer-aided design, image processing, desktop publishing, personal computers, workstations, applications software an d Internet access. As a bonus, all Fair visitors can enter to win various door prizes.
Exhibit hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 19. Fair activities take place in the Husky Union Build ing (HUB) on the main campus of the University of Washington in Seattle. All fair activities are free of charge and open to the public.
Emerging Issues for 21st Century Computing is the theme for the 1998 fair. Marjorie W. Hodges from the Office of In formation Technologies at Cornell University will present the keynote address “Piracy, Privacy, Pornography: Problems on the Net.” In her address, she will explore key issues surrounding the evolution and development of the Internet including the debate, laws and policies that impact the way we use the Internet now and in the future. The keynote will take place in the HUB Auditorium from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on March 18. Seating is on a space-available basis. Liv e telecasts will be delivered in HUB rooms 200 and 310, and the address will be re-telecast at 9 a.m. on March 19 in the HUB Auditorium.
More than 60 free seminars will focus on key issues involved in using computer technologies in schools, businesses a nd homes. Seminars will explore a variety of topics including recent technological advances, marketing and management strategies, ideas for curriculum enhancement, desktop publishing and Web design, Internet access issues, and ways to make computing acce ssible to all individuals.
