Clinton names UW librarian to White House advisory committee on computing and communications
President Clinton has named the director of the University of Washington’s Health Sciences Libraries and Information Center to a new committee to advise on the future of electronic information and communications, the White House announced Feb. 12.
Dr. Sherrilynne S. Fuller travels to Washington, D.C. next week for the first meeting of the White House Advisory Committee on High-Performance Computing and Communications, Information Technology, and the Next-Generation Internet, Feb. 27 and 28.
The advisory committee will provide guidance and advice on all areas of high-performance computing, communications and information technologies, as well as guide the Clinton Administration’s efforts to accelerate development and adoption of information technologies into the next century.
The 20-member committee includes representatives with a wide range of expertise from other universities, national laboratories, and high-tech companies. Dr. Ken Kennedy, director of the Center for Research on Parallel Computation at Rice University, has been named to chair the committee.
“It’s a great honor to be selected to serve on this important committee which is being asked to lay the groundwork for the next generation of the Internet,” said Fuller. “The strategic implications for universities, libraries, health care and the business community are enormous.”
At the UW, Fuller is also acting director of informatics for the School of Medicine, associate professor of medical education, and adjunct associate professor of library and information science. She is a director of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine/Pacific Northwest, and a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics.
