School of Pharmacy’s annual Katterman Lecture focuses on impact of managed care
Pharmacists and other health care professionals will discuss a variety of issues related to managed care and Medicaid, at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy’s annual Don B. Katterman Memorial Lecture.
The lecture is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 19, in room T-435 of the UW Health Sciences Center, 1959 N.E. Pacific.
In a departure from its usual format, the lecture will feature three speakers and provide a forum for participants to ask questions and discuss challenges facing the pharmacy profession.
Speakers are Julie Lake, director of the Division of Program Support in the state Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS); Dr. Dale Christensen, UW professor of pharmacy; and Rod Shafer, executive director of the Washington State Pharmacists Association.
They will cover such issues as the federal perspective on health reform and Medicaid, the state’s response to federal welfare cuts, the effects of managed care on pharmacy practice, quality of care issues, and compensation for pharmacy services.
Named in memory of a well-known Seattle pharmacist who was the first president of the Pharmacy Alumni Association and a president of the Washington State Pharmacists Association, the annual Katterman Lecture is sponsored by the UW School of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Alumni Association, with support from Merck & Co.
Following the lecture, pharmacy students will demonstrate state-of-the-art equipment and software available in the school’s new Pharmaceutical Care Learning Center.
The lecture is open to all interested health care professionals. Participants will receive three hours of continuing pharmacy education credit. Registration ($10) and continental breakfast begin at 8:15 a.m. For information call Sidney Herness at (206) 543-3485.
