UWT celebrates 15th anniversary Oct. 8

UW President Mark Emmert and UWT Chancellor Patricia Spakes will host the the 15th anniversary celebration for UW Tacoma on Oct. 8 at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center. Tickets are $75 per person, and seats are still available.

In 1990, UW Tacoma opened in rented space downtown. In the first year, 13 faculty members taught 176 students in one program, Liberal Studies. Today, more than 136 faculty members teach 2,000 students in eight academic programs on a beautiful permanent campus that embraces both the history and future of Tacoma.

The festivities will give UWT faculty, staff, students and friends a chance to pause and reflect on the university’s accomplishments over the last decade-and-a-half and gear up for the next stage of growth as UWT makes plans to admit its first freshmen and sophomores in Autumn 2006.

Scheduled speakers include Emmert, Spakes, UW Regent William H. Gates and former UW President William Gerberding. The New Blues Brothers Band will provide dance music and small ensembles from the Tacoma Youth Symphony will perform during the evening. Proceeds from this event will benefit UW Tacoma scholarships.

Underwriting for the event is being provided by Russell Investment Group, Milgard Manufacturing and Comcast. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.

The event is open to the public, but reservations are required in advance. Cocktail attire is suggested. To purchase a ticket or for more information, contact the UWT Office of Advancement at 253-692-4663 or advance@u.washington.edu.
