Faculty Senate seeks vice chair for 2006-2007
The UW Faculty Senate is taking nominations from those interested in becoming vice chair for the next school year, 2006-2007. And whoever is named will, if successful, go on to become chair of the senate the following year, 2007-2008.
The job is a three-year tenure in all, the same as a term on the Faculty Senate itself. After a year as vice chair, then a year as chair, the candidate will serve as chair of the Senate Committee on Planning and Budgetng during the following year, 2008-2009.
The position is requires a two-year half-time commitment and a one-year committee chair commitment. To help the Senate chair and vice chair with their duties, the Office of the Provost provides the elected representative with one and a half month’s summer salary and negotiated release time from other departmental duties. Other arrangements are possible for those on 12-month appointments.
“This is a unique time at the University,” said current Faculty Senate Chair Ashley Emery. “We have a new president and provost who are committed to shared governance. What this means to the faculty is that in assuming our responsibilities in sharing the governance of the University, we can expect the administration to act in accordance with the Faculty Code.
“As Mark (Emmert) and Phyllis (Wise) reorganize the functions of their offices, the Senate has the opportunity to revisit its structure and responsibilities of the Faculty Councils, the standing committees of the University faculty. The next two years will be critical in developing our relationship and the vice chair will play an important part.”
If you are interested or know someone who would be well qualified for the position, please contact the Nominating Committee, c/o Nancy Bradshaw, Faculty Senate Office, Box 351271, 206-685-2703, senate@u.washington.edu.
Nominations must be received by 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28. The Nominating Committee expects to recommend candidates to the Senate Executive Committee at its Nov. 14 meeting.
