Volwiler Lecture topic: digestive diseases

“New Gut Diseases and Old Ones Rediscovered” is the title for the Wade Volwiler Lecture, to be given at 8 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, at Medicine Grand Rounds in room T-625 of the Health Sciences Center.

The speaker is Dr. Wilfred Weinstein, professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, and director of the Gastrointestinal Mucosal Biopsy Lab and GI Fellowship Program there.

In 2003 Weinstein received the career achievement award of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. His work has focused on gastrointestinal biopsy (taking a small piece of tissue from the digestive tract) and its use in research, diagnosis and treatment. Weinstein was a fellow, working with Dr. Cyrus Rubin, now professor emeritus of medicine, at the UW Division of Gastroenterology after earning his medical degree at Queen’s University in Ontario and completing his medical residency at McGill University.

Weinstein will also speak at the Pacific Northwest Gastroenterology Society meeting Thursday evening and at a Continuing Medical Education program on Friday.

Dr. Wade Volwiler joined the School of Medicine faculty in 1949 and led the Division of Gastroenterology until 1980. He died in 2003.
