Registration opens for 2006 MLK Jr. Day of Service

The 2006 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is Jan. 16, 2006. Members of the UW community, and their families, are encouraged to participate and “Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off.” Registration for the event will be open from Dec. 5 until Jan. 12, 2006.

Details are available at http://depts.washington.edu/mlkjr. At this site, participants can search a wide variety of projects and register either as an individual or as a member of a team. The United Way of King County generously hosts and develops a database with a wide variety of day-long service projects. Last year, nearly 700 UW faculty, staff and students participated in community projects including habitat restoration, indoor painting at local social service agencies, work in community gardens, and helping elderly and disabled homeowners with chores.

The kick off rally for the MLK Jr. Day of Service will occur at 8 a.m. on Jan. 16 in the Mary Gates Hall Commons. Free t-shirts, great food, and inspiring words by University and community leaders will kick off the first Day of Service of 2006. President Emmert, Mayor Greg Nickels, United Way of King County Chief Executive Officer Jon Fine, and UW Alumni Association Executive Director John Buller will gather at the rally to help the UW community kick off a tremendous day of service and giving.
