Stahl gets Procter & Gamble Award in microbiology

David A. Stahl, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is this year’s recipient of the Procter & Gamble Award in Applied and Environmental Microbiology from the American Society for Microbiology.

“This is the most prestigious award in the environmental field given by the society,” said Mary Lidstrom, vice provost for research at the UW. “It’s a real honor.”

The intent of the award, which carries a $2,000 cash prize, is to recognize achievement in research and development in microbiology. As the 2006 recipient, Stahl will give the Procter & Gamble lecture at the society’s general meeting, scheduled for May in Orlando, Fla.

The research group that Stahl leads studies the structure and function of microbial communities in a wide variety of habitats, including extreme environments, aquatic systems, microbe-host interactions, and contaminated systems.

Stahl earned his bachelor’s degree from the UW in 1971, and received master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He joined the faculty at the UW in 2000.
