When competing with all stations, KUOW’s Gordon Black won a second in the Investigative Reporting category for “Suquamish Tribe Housing.” Marcie Sillman won a first in the Documentary category for “Hawaiian Language Preservation” and Cathy Duchamp got an honorable mention in the same category for “Orca Odyssey.” Brandt won a second in Sports Reporting for “Adults on the Edge.” Knute Berger, Arvid Hokanson and Steve Scher won a first in the Commentary, Analysis and Editorial category for “Nader, Righteous Alternative?” and Mona Eltahawy, Hokanson and Scher won a third in the same category for “Seattle, Strangers on a Bus Stop.”

FIRST IN FOOD: Husky Den won first-place honors in the 2003 Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards competition sponsored by the National Association of College & University Food Services in the retail/multiple concepts/outlet category for a large school. In college and university culinary arts, says Housing and Food Services, winning this award is the ultimate professional tribute. It salutes the most successful ideas in menus, presentations, special-event planning and new dining concepts. Husky Den goes on to compete for the grand prize in the retail category against the first-place winners from medium- and small-sized schools. The winner of the grand prize will be announced at the NACUFS National Convention July 8–12.

TEACHING HONOR: Speech and Hearing Sciences Professor Richard Folsom has been chosen as the winner of the Excellence in Teaching Award given by the UW chapter of the Mortar Board Honor Society. The group created the award this year to honor professors who have made significant contributions to the lives and educations of undergraduates. Folsom was honored at a ceremony last night.

TEACHING HONOR TOO: Drama Professor Barry Witham has been selected to receive the 2003 Betty Jean Jones Award. This award is presented by the American Theatre and Drama Society to an outstanding teacher of American theatre and drama.
