Registration begins for annual MLK Day of Service

The 2004 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is Jan. 19. All members of the UW community are urged to participate. Registration for the event continues through Jan. 14.

Details are available on the Web at http://depts.washington.edu/mlkjr. Participants can register online and choose from a variety of projects.

The Web site with listed projects, operated by the United Way, is searchable by social concern and distance from home, so that participants can find suitable opportunities. In the previous 3 years, more than 2,000 UW faculty, staff and students have participated in community projects. The Web site also has a schedule for the Kick-Off Rally, which will begin at 8 a.m. at the By George Café. Volunteer activities occur between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Another way to volunteer is to become a Team Leader. Team Leaders are the communications link between a group of volunteers and the agency. Individuals also can recruit an entire group of volunteers from among friends and associates.

“Active participation in some area of community service seems a fitting way to honor the memory of Dr. King,” says Jackie Gardner, associate professor of pharmacy who participated in last year’s Day of Service by forming a team to help rebuild the Rattlesnake Ledges trail, a public access trail in East King County. “This holiday calls for each of us to reflect upon our place in the larger community and how we accept our responsibilities.”
