Research Integrity series begins in June

The Biomedical Research Integrity (BRI) Series, administered by the Department of Medical History & Ethics Continuing Education Program, was developed several years ago by the UW School of Medicine in response to a directive by the National Institutes of Health. This directive requires that all postdoctoral researchers, fellows, and graduate students supported by NIH training grants be provided with training in the ethics of research. Additionally, the Medical School Executive Committee recommends that all trainees, regardless of funding source, participate in the BRI Series during their training.

The 2004 series will begin on Wednesday, June 2. Lectures on four topics will be free and open to all UW-affiliated faculty, staff, and students. This year, all lectures will be repeated at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), and typically on the same day. With the exception of the lectures on mentor/trainee responsibilities, the FHCRC lectures will be identical to those offered at the UW.

All lectures at the UW will be in Hogness Auditorium (room A-420 in the Health Sciences Building); all lectures at FHCRC will be in Pelton Auditorium.

For those required to attend, one attendance credit will be awarded per topic, not per lecture. Principal investigators will be able to tell trainees and students the number of lectures and discussion groups required to satisfy the NIH requirement.
