TOP ACADEMIC: Law Professor Anita Ramasastry received the 2004 National South Asian Bar Association’s Outstanding Academician Award. “We wanted to recognize the significant achievements of South Asian academicians to the profession of law in the United States,” said Navneet Chugh, president of NASABA. Ramasastry, a co-director of the Shidler Center for Technology, Law & Commerce at the UW, was honored for her research on electronic commerce and the Patriot Act. She was also recognized for her community service through the Immigrant Families Advocacy Project, which helps victims of domestic violence, and for being an excellent teacher.


TOPS IN I.E.: The Department of Industrial Engineering has announced its departmental awards for the year. The awards are voted on by students, faculty, and staff and honor those who are outstanding in their area and are committed to the continuous improvement of industrial engineering. Outstanding Undergraduates: Lam Ma, Vanessa Lee, David Wong; Outstanding Teaching Assistant: Sarintip Satitsatian; Oustanding Staff: Kellus Stone; Outstanding Faculty: Kailash Kapur; Director’s Award for Outstanding Service: Jennifer Wallace.


MARKET TIME: If you’re around the University District on Saturday, drop by the Farmer’s Market that is again open on the grounds of the University Heights Center at 50th and University Way. On July 10 you can listen to a couple of singers while you shop, and on July 17 you’ll be able to taste berries and talk to the author of a new berry cookbook. The market is open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. every Saturday through Nov. 20.


KUDOS: Sarena D. Seifer, research assistant professor of health services and executive director of Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, has been invited to help plan the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s 75th anniversary seminar on the theme of “Racial and ethnic health disparities: schools of public health respond as engaged institutions.” The invitational seminar will take place in February, 2005 in Houston.
