Local neuroscience meeting
The Pacific Cascade and Vancouver, B.C. chapters of the Society for Neuroscience are joining forces to produce a local day-long meeting on the UW campus Friday, April 8. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Richard Tsien of Stanford University. Dr. William Catterall, UW professor and chair of pharmacology, and Dr. Y.T. Wang from the University of British Columbia will also be speakers. Organizers are asking those who want to attend to register by March 14. Medicine Northwest online
The latest edition of Medicine Northwest, a lay-oriented science and medicine magazine from UW Medicine at the University of Washington, is available on the Web at http://depts.washington.edu/mnw  The Winter/Spring 2005 issue contains articles featuring UW Medicine experts on such topics as wound healing, living organ donation, treatment of sleep disorders, kids and sports, and the latest in high blood pressure prevention and care. Writers from UW Medicine/Health Sciences News and Community Relations and from Harborview Medical Center Community Relations produce the magazine. Faculty workshop at HMC
Harborview Medical Center will be the site for a faculty development workshop on communication, sponsored by the Department of Medical Education and Biomedical Informatics and the Office of Faculty Development in the School of Medicine. Britt Poulson of Poulson Leadership consultants will lead the session from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, March 16, in room 117 of the Research and Training Building. “Improve Your Communication, Improve Your Leadership” is the title. Prostate cancer forum
A public forum on “Prostate Cancer Prevention” with physicians and researchers from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the UW is planned from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 22, in Pelton Auditorium at FHCRC. Award for Bremner
Dr. William Bremner, chair of the Department of Medicine, has received the 2005 Mayo Soley Award from the Western Society for Clinical Investigation. The honor is given annually to a senior investigator who has made original and important contributions to research, and recognizes lifetime achievement and training for junior investigators. Bremner is best known for his extensive work on male contraception. The award was presented last month during Western Regional Meetings of the American Federation of Medical Research in Carmel, Calif.


Dental education award
Dr. Wendy Mouradian, clinical associate professor of pediatrics, based in pediatric dentistry, has received a Presidential Citation from the American Dental Education Association. She has worked to integrate oral health training into the curriculum for medical students and to promote collaboration between medical and dental practitioners. She directs the School of Dentistry’s Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE) program, and has developed opportunities for community-based dental education. She is also interested in reducing disparities in oral health care available to children.


Presidential term
Dr. Peter Byers, professor of medicine in the Division of Medical Genetics and professor of pathology, became president of the American Society of Human Genetics in January for a one-year term. The group includes more than 8,000 researchers, clinicians and other professionals.
