ARCHITECTURAL HONORS: The UW Bothell and Tacoma campuses each took design-excellence honors at the 51st annual American Institute of Architects Seattle Honor Awards for Washington Architecture recently. The NBBJ architectural firm received an Honor Award for its design of the UW Bothell/Cascadia Community College campus, which was cited by the jury of fellow architects for “that rare achievement of a massive set of buildings delivered with great respect for human scale.” Meanwhile, LMN Architects received an Award of Merit for designing the Keystone Building at UW Tacoma, which the jury said “takes full advantage of a tight urban space” and was praised for creating “a contemporary response to traditional building forms and adapting their vocabulary to new uses.” The jury also gave two awards to Architecture Professor David Miller’s firm, Miller/Hull: an Award of Merit for the Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion and a Commendation for the Seattle Academy of Arts & Sciences Gymnasium.

AVS STARS: AVS, the Science and Technology Society, honored several members of the UW Chemical Engineering Department recently. Professor Buddy Ratner received the Medard Welch Award “for innovative research on biomaterial interfaces and establishing the field of biomaterials surface science.” Professor Eric Stuve was named an AVS Fellow, recognizing members who have made outstanding contributions in areas of interest to AVS. And grad student Matthew Wagner received a Graduate Research Award, given to recognize and encourage excellence in graduate studies in the sciences and technologies of interest to AVS.
GLOBAL LIBRARIAN: Lizabeth (Betsy) Wilson, director of University Libraries, has been appointed to the AAU/ARL Global Resources Program Advisory Committee. The Global Resources Program, a joint initiative of the Association of American Universities and the Association of Research Libraries, focuses on improving access to international research materials through cooperative structures, the use of new technologies, and increased communication with the scholarly community regarding future information needs.
MLA MENTION: The Modern Language Association gave English Professor Barbara Fuchs honorable mention in the competition for the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Comparative Literary Studies. Fuchs was honored for her book, Mimesis and Empire: The New World, Islam, and European Identities, a study of the complex imitations of European identity in Spanish-language texts of the Old and New Worlds.
KUDOS: Business School Professor Terry Shevlin has been named editor of the professional journal The Accounting Review . . . Susan Ford, graphic designer at CHDD, illustrated a newly published children’s book, Loon Lake, by Jonathan London. She’ll be signing books at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Secret Garden Bookshop.
