Garcia honored

Charlie Garcia, assistant dean for multicultural affairs in the School of Medicine, will receive a Service Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Student Affairs-Minority Affairs Section (GSA-MAS) on Nov. 11 at the AAMC annual meeting in San Francisco.

Garcia advises School of Medicine department chairs on issues of faculty development and the recruitment of residents and fellows, and he also directs the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Western Consortium Minority Medical Education Program, the UW Health Careers Opportunity Program and the Native American Center of Excellence. Before his appointment as assistant dean in 2001, he was director of the Multicultural Affairs Office for 10 years.

The GSA-MAS award recognizes outstanding contributions to minorities in medical education. Garcia is being honored for longstanding support of minority individuals in medical education and efforts to expand opportunities for minority young people interested in health care careers.
