UW honors Martin Luther King Jr. with day of service
More than 550 volunteers – faculty, staff and students — will participate in some 45 projects on Jan. 16, which will be a day of service for the University of Washington in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The UW community has held a day of service for the past six years and is a partnership between the UW and the United Way of King County.
Volunteers will participate in a variety of activities, including:
- develop a community garden in Jackson Place
- pack clothing, toys, and books at the Baby Boutique, an organization that provides homeless children with essential items
- help with emergency preparedness at Small Faces Child Development Center.
- do general maintenance (hanging shelves, fixing fences and stairs, clearing ivy) at the Center for Human Services – King County
- sort and pack food at Northwest Harvest – an organization that serves 300 food banks around the state
- paint Sacajawea Elementary School
- plant native trees with Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust
- with EarthCorps, remove non-native invasive plants that are threatening the health of our urban forests
- do home repair and cleaning with Volunteer Chore Services (a program of Catholic Community Services-volunteers help low-income elders and adults living with disabilities to continue to live independently in their own homes)
UW activities kick off at 8:30 a.m. in Mary Gates Hall Commons with remarks by UW President Mark Emmert, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, and Jon Fine, president and CEO of United Way of King County.
