From classical to jazz: School of Music plans five concerts

The School of Music has a busy schedule over the coming week, with five ensemble concerts planned.

Students and faculty — including Robin McCabe, Steven Novacek, Craig Sheppard, Ronald Patterson, Toby Saks, and Melia Watras, — join forces Thursday, Feb. 9, to celebrate Mozart’s genius with a concert full of the composer’s works. It will be at 7:30 p.m. in Meany Theater.

Moving quickly from classical to jazz, a concert on Friday, Feb 10 features music made with hammers on bars and strings. Marc Seales and Tom Collier perform piano/vibraphone duets of original works and jazz standards, followed by the New Stories Trio (Marc Seales, Doug Miller, and John Bishop) with Tom Collier collaborating on more originals and jazz standards. This event will be at 7:30 p.m. in Brechemin Auditorium.

Another Brechemin concert is slated for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb 11, as guitar students of Steven Novacek perform works for guitar duo and guitar quartet by Fernando Sor, Georg Phillip Teleman, Julio Cesar Oliva and Reginald Smith Brindle, as well as anonymous traditional Spanish folk songs.

Valentine’s Day brings a concert by the Contemporary Group at 7:30 p.m. in Meany Theater. The program includes works by Louis Andreissen, George Crumb, Steve Reich, Hector Tosar and Igor Stravinsky.

And finally, the Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Campus Bands will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Meany Theater. The theme is “Colors and Contours,” with conductors Brad McDavid, Alex Trevino, Joel Heredia, Tom Slabaugh, Nse Ekpo, Scott Fry and Paul Bain

Ticket Prices are $10 for all concerts except the guitar concert, which is $5. They may be purchased in advance for the Meany Theater events at the Arts Ticket Office, 206-543-4880 or www.music.washington.edu (click on “Events”). Tickets for Brechemin events are available only at the door.
