BRAVE MAN: A UW student is headed to Washington, DC this week to pick up a Citizen Bravery Award from the U.S. Department of the Interior. It’s the second award Edward Marsette has received after risking his life to pull three teenagers from a burning car. Marsette, a sophomore in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, was earlier awarded the Distinguished Public Service Medal from the Auburn City Council. Here are excerpts of the citation from the Department of the Interior:

On Wednesday, March 15, at 1 a.m., a vehicle occupied by six Muckleshoot tribal members flipped, crashed into a utility pole, and caught on fire. Marsette ran from his home to the top of a nearby embankment where he could see the overturned automobile. Without regard for his personal safety, Marsette plunged 15 feet down a steep embankment and repeatedly reached into the burning vehicle to assist the occupants, receiving burns to his hands, legs, and forearms. Marsette was able to pull three of the five passengers trapped in the vehicle to safety. He remained with the victims until law enforcement and emergency personnel arrived before seeking treatment for his own injuries.

WARMING CHAT: David Battisti, professor of Atmospheric Sciences, was one of five scientists who chatted with more than 16,000 high school and college science students via Internet protocol television as part of Earth Day activities. During the event, students participated in live, two-way IPTV video/chat broadcasts, first with a panel of scientific experts and then with a panel of religious leaders, on the topic of global warming.

GOING UP: Forget the elevator. UW staffer GregRobin Smith ran up the steps of the Columbia Tower Building in 13 minutes and 6 seconds and raised $3,248 in the process. Smith, who works for Property and Transport Services, was participating in the Big Climb, sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma society to raise money for research. Smith placed second for individuals and about 10th overall.
