Justice Alan Page to speak at the Costco Scholarship Fund breakfast Thursday at Seattle University

News and Information

Justice Alan  Page will be the guest speaker at the seventh-annual Costco Scholarship Fund Breakfast, which will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Thursday at Seattle University.

Justice Page is a former professional football player with the Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Vikings, and is Minnesota’s first African-American Supreme Court Justice. He is the first defensive player in National Football League history to receive the Most Valuable Player Award and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is a compelling speaker on creating equal education opportunities.

The breakfast event supports the Costco Scholarship Fund, which was created by Costco President and CEO Jim Sinegal and Costco Chairman of the Board Jeff Brotman to make it possible academically, financially and personally for underrepresented minority students to attend and graduate from the University of Washington or Seattle University.

“Our country’s social and economic health depends upon giving all students an opportunity to come to college, to utilize the skills that they have developed and to get themselves to the same starting line as everybody else in society,” Brotman said.

“Diversity in education enriches not only the person getting the scholarship but also the lives of everyone on campus and in the community,” Sinegal added.

Since its inception in 2000, the Costco Scholarship Fund has raised more than $10 million, helping more than 750 qualified, underrepresented minority students attend college. Past speakers have included Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Sidney Poitier, Dr. Jocelyn Elders and Edward James Olmos.

More than 800 attendees are expected, including Washington state Gov. Christine Gregoire, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels as well as former governors.
