Stem cell research, climate change among topics in coming lectures

Dr. Charles E. “Chuck” Murry, co-director of the UW’s new Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, will present Regeneration Gaps: Promises, Problems and Policies in Stem-Cell Research, at the second of the Medical Lecture Series. The lecture, sponsored by UW Medicine and The Seattle Public Library, takes place at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4, in the Microsoft Auditorium, Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave. Murry, a professor of pathology and director of the Center for Cardiovascular Biology, studies stem-cell biology and repair of the injured heart.


A town forum, The Changing UW Climate for Clinical Research, launches the fourth annual The Investigator Needs to Know (ThINK) Series.

The first seminar takes place at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in T-639 HSC. Presenters include Jeffrey Cheek, associate vice provost for research compliance and operations, Office of Research; Nora Disis, professor of medicine, director of UW General Clinical Research Center, and principal investigator, Clinical and Translational Science Award; Richard Meisinger, assistant dean for planning and new initiatives, Office of Research and Graduate Education, School of Medicine; and Karen Moe, acting director of the Human Subjects Division and associate professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The seminar will be simulcast at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, room G-3102, Harborview Medical Center, Research and Training Building, room 109; VAPSHCS, Building 1, room 518; and Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, Wright Auditorium in the Giraffe Zone.

Cecilia Giachelli, professor of bioengineering and deputy director of the UW Engineered Biomaterials Center, presents Hearts of Stone: Chipping Away at the Mysteries of Vascular Matrix Calcification, noon, Thursday, Oct. 12, Hogness Auditorium, Health Sciences Building. Giachelli is also an adjunct professor in the Departments of Pathology and Oral Biology. She received her PH.D. in Pharmacology from the UW in 1987 and joined the Bioengineering Department in 1999.
