American Academy of Ophthalmology honors Kalina

Robert E. Kalina, UW professor of ophthalmology, has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Lifetime Achievement Honor Award for his contributions to the Academy and to the ophthalmology profession.


He is one of six eye doctors to receive the award for their contributions as instructors, authors of scientific and educational materials, and service to state and professional organizations, as well as the academy. The AAO is the world’s largest association of eye physicians and surgeons, with more than 27,000 members worldwide. Ophthalmologists treat eye diseases and injuries, and perform eye surgery.


Kalina has advanced training and experience in diseases of the retina. His special research interests include retinopathy of prematurity, intraocular tumors, retinal degenerations, and eye manifestations of inherited diseases.


Kalina served as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology from 1972 to 1996. He is on the medical staff of Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and Children’s Hospital & Regional Medical Center.
