Award Winners

The Harborview ICU liaison program has won the National Association of Public Hospitals 2007 Safety Net Award for Patient-Centered Care. The program will be honored at the NAPH annual Meeting in Boston in June.


J. Randall Curtis was appointed to the National Advisory Council of the National Institute of Nursing Research. The council reviews grant applications and makes recommendations about the institutes intramural research activities. Curtis is a UW professor of medicine and founder and director of the Harborview/UWMC End-of-Life Care Research Program.


Albert La Spada, director of the UW Center for Neurogenetics & Neurotherapeutics, has been named the Lieberman Award winner for 2007 by the Hereditary Disease Foundation. The award recognizes his work of advancing the pathogenesis of hereditary disease and identifying and developing treatments for the disease. LaSpada has been doing groundbreaking research on the regulation of the PGC1 alpha pathway which will help identify paths to effective treatment of hereditary diseases.

Thomas Martin, vice chair of the Department of Medicine, was chosen to receive the William J. Martin, II Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Thoracic Society. The award honors innovation, leadership, public service and patient care.


Gordon Rubenfeld, associate professor of medicine, will receive the Public Advisory Roundtable Excellence Award from the American Thoracic Society for improving the lives of patients with pulmonary illness.


Phase 2 of UW Medicine research facility under way


Construction is under way on the second phase of UW Medicine’s Research Facility in South Lake Union. This phase of work includes construction of three new buildings — two to house laboratory and support spaces and one for administrative offices.


15th Annual Salute Harborview Gala — March 17

March is National Social Work Month


The National Association of Social Workers has declared March National Social Work Month. This year’s theme is Hope and Health: Help Starts Here. The UW School of Social Work will present several free activities throughout the month to celebrate the many contributions of social work and those who work in the social work field.
