Eighth-graders get hands-on environmental health lessons

For the past several years, the outreach and education team at the Center for Ecogenetics & Environmental Health has hosted the 8th grade class of Olympic View Middle School in Mulkiteo at the UW. The students participate in the Integrated Environmental Health Middle School Project (IEHMSP), a part of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

On March 27 and 28, Olympic View students students visited the Burke Museum and toured working research labs. During the two-day field trip, students experienced what a day on campus is like, learned how the natural history and ecology of the region relate to human health, and learned how “cool” hands-on science careers really are. The event launched a six-week environmental health unit at the school that culminates in

student-driven research projects and end-of-the-year presentations to parents.
