Dr. Ronald Maier, professor of surgery and chief of surgery at Harborview Medical Center, has received the 2007 Flance-Karl Award from the American Surgical Association, the oldest and most prestigious academic surgical society in the United States. The award is presented annually to a surgeon who has made significant contributions in basic laboratory research that can be applied to clinical surgery.


Dr. Ferric Fang, professor of laboratory medicine and of microbiology, has been elected a fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology. He is an expert in host-pathogen interactions and is known for applying state-of-the-art molecular biology methods to work in clinical microbiology.


Dr. David Mankoff, UW professor of radiology and radiologist at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, has been named to lead a new Experimental Imaging Committee being formed by the American College of Radiology’s Imaging Network (ACRIN). The committee will focus on new technology being developed and on clinical trials, particularly multi-center trials. Early studies of advanced cancer imaging are also planned.


Dr. Michael V. Vitiello, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, has been elected to a three-year term as president of the Sleep Research Society (SRS). The SRS, founded in 1961, is the oldest professional organization representing sleep scientists in the nation. The SRS is an association of over twelve hundred research scientists and clinicians working in the areas of sleep, circadian rhythms and sleep disorders with the goals of fostering scientific investigation, professional education and career development in sleep research and academic sleep medicine.
