Secretary of the Faculty Applicants Sought

Faculty Senate Leadership, in collaboration with the President, seeks applications for the position of Secretary of the Faculty. The new secretary may take office between March 1 and June 30 depending on individual arrangements.

The Secretary of the Faculty oversees changes to and publication of the University Handbook and manages the administration of the Office of University Committees (including the Faculty Senate, Faculty Councils, and faculty adjudicative proceedings). The secretary is responsible for recording the minutes of the senate, the Senate Executive Committee, and (through senate office staff) of faculty councils and committees and of adjudication cases.

The secretary also provides information and advice to all faculty in their own departments, and is available to meet with individual faculty (or groups) who have inquiries about University policy.

The Secretary of the Faculty generally serves a 5-year term, and so can readily provide continuity and a sense of history to Faculty Council and senate chairs by maintaining historical archives and personal memories of faculty deliberations and actions. As a repository of the office’s “collective memory,” the secretary is able to assist in orienting new Faculty Senate and faculty council chairs to the most effective ways to work together with their faculty colleagues and with the University administration.

The Secretary of the Faculty is typically an experienced faculty member with tenure and a strong interest in faculty affairs and University governance. He or she is appointed by the President from a list of not fewer than three nominees submitted by the elected members of the Executive Committee. The secretary serves at the pleasure of the President. The past seven secretaries include Lea Vaughn (Current Secretary), Miceal Vaughan, John Bollard, Don Williams, William Phillips, Laurel Lewis, and Richard Wilkie.

The position requires at least a half-time commitment all year. Appropriate arrangements for release time and salary are made through the Presidents office.

Letters of interest or application should be sent to the Secretary of the Faculty Search Committee, c/o Marilyn Gray, Faculty Senate Office, Box 351271. The Committee will begin considering applications on March 4.
