Urban horticulture library reopens

The Center for Urban Horticulture’s Miller Library reopened Dec. 10 in interim space at the center and the “Plant Answer Line” has now resumed operation. Library materials that could be salvaged have been assessed, cleaned and organized in the seven months since the arson attack on the center destroyed much of Merrill Hall, the main structure at the center.

About half the collection, including reference, lending and current journals, will be in the interim library in Isaacson Hall, right across the courtyard from the old library. The rest of the collection will be available upon request with the staff picking up items a couple of times a week from their storage facility at Sandpoint, according to librarian Val Easton.

Library hours will be the same as before: Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Plant Answer Line, a quick reference service for gardeners that operates, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. can be reached at 206-897-5268 or by e-mail at hortlib@u.washington.edu.

The library found that 15 percent of its collection was beyond saving following the arson attack.
