PHILANTHROPIC FAMILY: Ellen Ferguson, community relations director for the Burke Museum, and her family were recently honored at National Philanthropy Day ceremonies in Seattle as the state’s outstanding philanthropic family. The family’s many philanthropic contributions include gifts of more than $2 million to the Burke Museum, with an additional planned gift of $2.5 million. Ellen Ferguson has served as a half-time staff member at the museum for 20 years, and more than 10 of those were without pay.

RESIDENCE HALL STARS: The UW’s Residence Hall Student Association won two awards at a recent regional competition sponsored by the Pacific Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls. The group won Program of the Year honors for a drive called “Save a Life, Help Nicole” aimed at increasing bone marrow registrations. The drive was particularly to benefit a local girl – the daughter of alums – who has leukemia. The association also won a student award for a leadership program designed for members of hall council executive boards. The association will move to national competition in May.

CHAMPION CHAIRS: Contest judges at the regional furniture competition in Boise, Idaho this month were so inspired by the “high quality of design and draftsmanship” displayed by UW College of Architecture and Urban Planning students that an Honor Award was added. This special honor went to Erica Burns, Jamie Fleming, Aaron Pleskac and Kimberly Deyoung. The UW also brought home a Best Design Award for a console table by Charles Choo. Senior architecture lecturer Andy Vanags said the event is a showcase for work from California, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Utah and Washington.
