New protection for bus riders due next week

A new bus shelter for patrons who wait in front of Guthrie Annex 4 on the main campus should be ready for use on Monday. The new shelter, designed by UW’s architectural adviser Lee Copeland, was paid for by Parking Services and constructed by UW staffers in Facilities Services.

According to Sharon Griffin, director of design services in Capital Projects, the proposal to install the shelter was brought before the Campus Landscape Advisory Committee last spring. The spot previously had no shelter, leading those waiting for the bus to seek rainy weather protection on the Guthrie Annex 4 porch.

Because the committee felt that the standard Metro shelter would not be appropriate on the site, Copeland was asked to design something for it. He describes the result as “a relatively modest structure that I designed to fit right next to Guthrie Annex.”

According to alterations manager Daunne Zinger, workers expect to install seating and signs today. The structure will thus be usable on Monday, although painting and landscaping won’t be completed until next week.
