Search Continues for Dean of Undergraduate education
The University of Washington invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Undergraduate Education and Vice Provost, with a term to begin July 1, 2002. We seek a visionary leader with an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit. The candidate should be committed to fostering collaborative relationships among departments and should be able to develop partnerships with other institutions of higher education.
The Dean of Undergraduate Education and Vice Provost is responsible for the coordination of policies affecting undergraduate students throughout the University. In addition to overseeing instructional support programs in the Undergraduate Gateway Center, the Office of Educational Assessment and Classroom Support Services, the Dean has or shares responsibility for specific academic programs, such as the University Honors Program, Program on the Environment, Program on Africa, and the Center for Quantitative Science. The Dean is responsible for the Mary Gates Endowment for Students and for the programs of the Teaching Academy. The Dean works closely with the University Libraries in making information resources and services available to all undergraduate students.
The Dean and Vice Provost reports to the President and the Provost, and represents the University with several off-campus groups, including community college officials, counterparts at the four-year colleges and universities, and the Higher Education Coordinating Board.
The successful candidate will be eligible to hold a senior faculty rank in an academic department within the University of Washington. To apply, please submit a full c.v., a one-page statement of your vision for undergraduate education at a major research university, and the names of five references who can address your ability to assume a leadership role in undergraduate education.

Deadline for Grant Proposals
Oct. 18 is the deadline for receipt of proposals at Grant and Contract Services for proposals due on Nov. 1 at the awarding agency.
The Write Stuff
The UW Writing Project, directed by Virginia Berninger, has been doing research on writing in local schools over the last 10 years. During Autumn 2001 we are offering tutoring based on the research findings for handwriting. First-graders who are struggling with handwriting may be eligible to participate. The tutoring is free and will take place at the University twice a week for six weeks.

Surplus Auction
Surplus property and equipment released by UW departments will be available for purchase by the general public Saturday, Oct. 13 at an oral auction. Bidding begins at 10 a.m. The warehouse will be open for previewing Friday, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. and from 8 to 10 a.m. on the day of the sale. PROJECT NAME: University of Washington Seattle Campus Master Plan
LEAD AGENCY: University of Washington
DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSAL: New Master Plan for the Seattle Campus. The new plan will provide a framework for proposed development of approximately 3 million square feet consisting of 60 potentially developable sites; proposed development may include demolitions, remodeling, renovations and new construction. In addition the plan includes potential addition of new open spaces, modification of the University’s Transportation Management Plan.

LOCATION OF PROPOSAL: The campus of the University of Washington is located in Northeast Seattle, the area of the campus is approximately 694 acres. In general the campus is bounded by 45th Street on the north; 15th Avenue NE, Eastlake Avenue NE and Interstate 5 on the west; Portage Bay and Lake Washington Ship Canal on the south; and Union Bay/NE 35th Street on the west.
