Home Improvement Fair helps you maximize space

Feeling a little hemmed in at home? Then you might want to check out the Home Improvement Fair offered on campus on Wednesday, April 9, by UW Benefits in partnership with HomeStreet Bank. This year’s theme is “Maximize your Living Space.”

“With the housing costs in our area, we recognized that people aren’t as quick to move as they once were,” said Mary Hale, Web and communications specialist for Benefits and WorkLife. “Therefore, we thought it would be good to offer people ways to make the best of the living situation they’re in right now.”

The fair will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Commons area of Mary Gates Hall. It’s a new location for the fair, Hale said, and also a new time of year. Previous fairs were in June.

“We believe that people interested in doing home projects are thinking about that in the spring, so this date made more sense,” Hale said. “We’ve also extended the time allotted for the fair. Our earlier fairs ended at 2 p.m.”

Attendees at the fair can simply cruise the booths of vendors, getting their particular questions answered. There will also be free demonstrations on creating storage solutions from recycled household items, faux painting, getting your home organized, landscaping and more.

Some of the vendors represented at the fair include builders and remodelers specializing in “green” construction methods, a landscaping firm, professional organizers to help you clear your clutter and a service to help you buy affordable art.

Admission to the fair is free, there will be refreshments, and you might even win a door prize. The grand prize is the design and installation of a custom closet by California Closets. Other prizes include:

  • A two-hour in-home consultation with a professional organizer.
  • A $100 IKEA gift certificate.
  • A $50 gift certificate to Designs for a Living (interior designer).
  • Books on interior design and personal organization.
