Is your teenager hiding an eating disorder?

In the United States, as many as 10 in 100 young women suffer from an eating disorder. Two psychiatric eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia, are on the increase mostly among teenage girls, young women and some boys. Teenagers manipulate their weight with dreams of becoming models, entertainers and professional athletes. Overeating related to tension, poor nutritional habits and food fads are also common eating problems for youngsters. What are the symptoms and warning signs? How can we prevent and treat these serious and sometimes fatal disorders?

Rose Calderon, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine, will address these issues at the next UW Medicine and Seattle Public Library Medical Lecture Series, Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 6-7 p.m. at the West Seattle Library, 2306 42nd Avenue, S.W.  For more information, call 206-386-4636 or visit online at www.spl.org.
