DAILY DELIGHT: The UW Daily, under the leadership of publisher Kristin Millis, has recently received several national and regional honors. It was recognized at the spring conference of College Media Advisers with the 2009 Apple Award as the best overall newspaper at any four-year college. The Daily has received the Apple award three out of the past four years. The paper also received second-place honors from the College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers, Inc., in the Back To School Edition category for the Welcome Edition, the 116-page paper mailed to incoming freshman and transfer students. Later in April, the staff will hear how it has fared in the regional competition of the Society of Professional Journalists competition, where it is nominated in five categories. Last year, it garnered first place for best all-around daily student newspaper.

FIRST IN FILM: Independent America: Rising from Ruins, the story of small-business owners rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina, has won the New Orleans International Human Rights Film Festival’s award for Best Feature. The film is the work of Hanson Hosein, director of the Master of Communication in Digital Media program. Rising from Ruins has also been chosen for the Seattle International Film Festival, and will be screened May 25 and 27.

BEN AGAIN: UW staff member GRobin Smith is once again taking his Benjamin Franklin – Innovative American show on the road, this time to the Café Allegro, in the alley right around the corner from Magus Books on 42nd Street. The show is at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 23. Tickets are $10, with all proceeds going to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). “This is part of an effort to raise $15,000 for the LLS by October of 2009 with participation in auctions, performances and appearances,” Smith said. “We have collected over $2,500 so far. If you have a group, we are interested in bringing one of our programs to it. Please contact us for details.” For general information, go to Ben-Franklin.org.
