Organ, guitar and saxophone to be featured in School of Music programs next week

On Sunday, April 26, Paul Richard Olson, organist and choirmaster of Grace Church in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., will present Suite III in C Major, by Domenico Zipoli; Two Chorale Preludes, by Johann Sebastian Bach; Sonata I in C minor, opus 27, by Joseph Rheinberger; plus three pieces by Albert Alain.

Olson, a past UW graduate student in music, was for many years an accompanist in the UW voice and choral divisions. He is a noted chamber musician who has presented recitals throughout the country.

The concert will be at 3 p.m. in the Walker Ames Room, Kane. Tickets are $10, cash or check at the door.

And on the same day, New York-based David Burgess, student of Andrés Segovia and former UW instructor, will conduct a master class in guitar. The class will be at 10 a.m. in 213 Music. Master classes are free and open to the public for observation.

The saxophone will have its day, or rather its night, on Wednesday, April 29, when the School of Music presents Saxophone Night, an evening of solo and ensemble performances by members of the UW Saxophone Studio, all of whom are students of Michael Brockman, who has taught at the UW School of Music for more than 20 years.

Performers will include top UW performance scholarship winners Bryan Smith and Melissa Winstanley, plus top jazz scholarship winners Ivan Arteaga and Scott Macpherson. Selections will include the famed Trio for Tenor Saxophone, Viola and Piano by German composer Paul Hindemith; the Fuzzy Bird Sonata by Japanese composer Takashi Yoshimatsu; and the Sonata for Saxophone and Piano by American composer Robert Muczynski, plus great jazz works by various American composers. Also on the program will be the epic Quartet for Saxophones by American composer Elliot Del Borgo, an extended, three-movement piece considered among the most important works in the saxophone ensemble repertoire.

Saxophone Night begins at 7:30 p.m. in Brechemin Auditorium. Tickets are $5, cash or check at the door.
