UW remembers first minority affairs vice president with celebration of life

A celebration of the life of Samuel E. Kelly, the founder and first vice president of the Office of Minority Affairs in 1970, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 27, in 130 Kane.

Kelly died on the morning of July 6 due to congestive heart failure.

When Kelly was hired as a University vice president by President Charles Odegaard, he became the first African American senior administrator at the UW. He held the position of vice president for nearly a decade.

His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Samuel E. Kelly Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarship support for undergraduate students enrolled in the Educational Opportunity Program who exhibit financial need.

Further details will be available soon on the Diversity Web page, http://www.washington.edu/diversity/.
