Percussion Ensemble to perform ‘Meany Beat’ on Feb. 25

The UW Percussion Ensemble will perform a variety of contemporary music composed for metallophones, membranophones, and idiophones in an evening called Meany Beat, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Meany Studio Theater.

Program selections include Richard Karpen’s The Silence Of Time for Percussion and Computer-Realized Sound, as well as pieces by Vic Firth and Yiu-Kwong Chung and ragtime pieces by George Hamilton Green, originally written for the xylophone. Featured soloists include Jennifer Wagner, Chia-Hao Hsieh and Chris Lennard.

An idiophone is a wooden or metallic object that’s struck, rattled or stroked to create a sound. A metallophone is, basically, a metal idiophone, using the properties of metal to create a pure sound that’s rich in harmonics. A membranophone is a kind of drum.

Tickets for the performance are $10. Call 206-543-4880 or visit online at www.music.washington.edu.
