School of Music: There will be jazz March 8, 10, 11

Jazz will be in the spotlight at three events coming from the School of Music — the Studio Jazz Ensemble on March 8 and Jazz Innovations I and II concerts on March 10 and 11.


The Studio Jazz Ensemble and the Modern Band, directed by Cuong Vu, will perform big band arrangements, repertory selections and new originals in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 8, in Meany Hall.


The Studio Jazz Band will present music written and arranged for big band by NYC-based saxophonist Andrew D’Angelo. Titles include Gay Disco, Sich Reped, Chorale, Big Butt, and Meg Nem Sa. The Modern Band will perform unique jazz-inspired interpretations of pop songs, including, Tear Drop by Massive Attack, I Believe by Stevie Wonder, Perfect Me, by Deerhoof, Something, by George Harrison and Hyperballad, by Bjork.

Student jazz ensembles coached by Marc Seales, Tom Collier, Cuong Vu and Phil Sparks will pay homage to the icons of jazz with new arrangements of classics and also break new ground with new compositions in the Jazz Innovations I and II concerts, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 10 and 11, in Brechemin Auditorium.
