Former EU president to speak at UW

Josep Borrell, who served as president of the European Union Parliament from 2004-07, will speak at the UW School of Law at 4 p.m. Monday April 26 at in 133 William H. Gates Hall.

Borrell is currently the president of the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, an international postgraduate teaching and research institute. He obtained his doctorate in Economic Sciences in 1976 and in 1983 became the chair of economic analysis at the Madrid Complutense University.

He has served in a variety of positions in the Spanish government and in the Spanish and European parliaments. In 1984 he became state secretary for finance, and from 1991 to 1996 served as minister for public works, transport, and the environment. From 1999 to 2004 Borrell was president of the European Affairs Committee in the Spanish Parliament. In 2002 he was elected as the representative of the Spanish Parliament in the 2004 European convention to debate the future of the European Union.
