ARCHAEOLOGY ARTISTS: The Burke Museum Archaeology Division was awarded the prestigious John D Spellman Award for Exemplary Achievement in Historic Preservation for 2010 by the King County Landmarks Commission. The team of archaeologists at the Burke Museum are being recognized for their “exceptional work in education, documentation, advocacy, and stewardship of King County’s archaeological record.” The awards program was named after the first King County Executive (and later governor), John D. Spellman, under whose leadership in 1980 the King County Historic Preservation Program and Landmarks Commission were established.

RED HOT AWARD: School of Forest Resources Emeritus Professor James Agee was awarded the Association for Fire Ecology’s Harold Biswell Lifetime Achievement award in Fire Ecology and Management at the association’s recent annual meeting. As one of only three doctoral students of Biswell who specialized in fire ecology, Agee was honored for “epitomizing the ideals established by his major professor: professionalism, patience, and above all, a sense of humor.”


TOP PUB: Viewpoints, a UW publication about diversity, has received a Gold Award in the Publications/Magazine categary in the 2010 Hermes Creative Awards. The competition is sponsored by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals, an international organization of marketing, communication, advertising, public relations, media production and freelance professionals. Those responsible for Viewpoints include Paul Rucker, publisher; Sue Brockmann, executive editor; Jon Marmor, editor and Michele Locatelli and Jenica Wilkie, designers.


PUPPY LOVE: Harry and Hendrix Husky, the UW Seattle and Tacoma mascots respectively, have a new girlfriend. Her name is Holly Husky and she’s the mascot at UW Bothell. UWB students suggested names for the new mascot and the top three were voted on by the student body. Holly was the final choice. She made her first public appearance on Earth Day at the ASUWB (student government) BBQ.

DAILY DUB: The UW student newspaper, the Daily, has been picking up awards lately. At the Society of Professional Journalists Region X, the publication was named Best All-Around Daily. Firsts went to Casey Smith for Breaking News Reporting, Christian Caple for Sports Column Writing, Caple and Maks Goldenshteyn for General News Reporting and Caple and Goldenshteyn for Sports Reporting. Colleen Kirsten won second place for Photo Illustration and Katelin Chow second place for TV General News. Region X includes Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The Daily also won Dave Adam’s Apple Award for the Best Overall Daily Newspaper (tabloid size) from the College Media Advisers, a national group. College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers, also a national group, awarded the Daily first place in the Run of Press Group category (ads grouped together), second place in Color Ads, third place in Newspaper Campaigns and third place in Best Back-toSchool/Orientation issues.
