Arts Roundup: Music, lectures — and the School of Drama’s ‘Fifth of July’

This week there is a smattering of events with a highlight being the School of Drama’s “Fifth of July,” directed by Professor Valerie Curtis-Newton.

Also, if Mongolian music suits your fancy, you’re in luck because the vibrant young ensemble, AnDa Union makes their Seattle debut on the Meany stage.

Short lectures on big ideas in Jewish history and culture. This year’s faculty speakers will discuss: “Are you Jewish or are you Hispanic?”; “Is Spinoza Good for the Jews?”; “Embracing My Inner Shtetl”; and “Anti-Semitism as a Christian Problem.”  This free event is presented by the Stroum Jewish Studies Program at UW. Faculty Lecture Series-Helen O’ Toole, Painting + Drawing
6 p.m. Nov. 7 | Henry Art Gallery
O’Toole, an associate professor, discusses her work as part of the tenure and promotion process. This lecture accompanies an exhibition of O’Toole’s artwork at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery Through Nov. 15. More info.

The School of Music and Earshot Jazz present noted New York City trumpeter Dave Douglas in concert with UW Jazz faculty Cuong Vu, trumpet, Ted Poor, drums; and top UW Jazz Studies students. More info.

ArtVENTURES: Scratch, Sniff, Create
2 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 10 | Henry Art Gallery
Sensations and experiences can activate the mind in unique ways. Join the Henry as they look at the work of Jason Dodge and explore how literary descriptions and smells can stimulate senses. Back in the Education Lounge they will be creating scratch and sniff poems. More info.

Bill Frisells Big Sur Quintet with Jim Woodring
7:30 p.m., Nov. 10 | Meany Hall
After Eyvind Kang and cartoonist Jim Woodring join him in an opening performance, Frisell presents his Big Sur Quintet. Playing Frisell’s compositions, the group evokes the singular spacious beauty of the California coastline. More info.

“Fifth of July”

Set in rural Missouri in 1977, the play revolves around the Talley family and focuses on their disillusionment with America in the wake of the Vietnam War. Wilson’s poignant play is rife with acting challenges while actively confronting many American taboos. More info.

In the last lecture in the series, photomedia Cummins, an associate professor, will discuss her work. This lecture accompanies an exhibition of Cummins’ artwork at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery through Nov. 15. More info.

“Shakespeare Ever After: His Remarkable Legacy”

Artwalk
Nov. 19 | Hall Health Center
About 140 unique (including a few nationally recognized) pieces of artwork created by UW students, faculty, staff and alumni will be on display for the UW community. There will also be a brief presentation led by Mark Shaw, Hall Health director of health promotion, discussing the topic, “How Art Can Enhance the Healing Process.”  More info.
