Film: “FIXED: The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement”
October 9 | Varsity Theater
From botox to bionic limbs, the human body is more upgradeable than ever. But how much of it can we alter and still be human? What do we gain or lose in the process? This award-winning documentary rethinks “disability” and “normalcy” by exploring technologies that promise to change our bodies and minds forever. The screening is sponsored by the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering at the University of Washington and a brief panel discussion will follow the 60-minute film. More info.

Cuong Vu Trio
October 11 | Meany Studio Theater
Joined by bassist Stomu Takeishi and drummer Ted Poor, the Cuong Vu Trio explores sounds and form while embracing the undercurrents of underground rock music along with any other style that may come into their collective impulse. Together, they create a formidable trio that crisscrosses styles and conventional languages in pursuit of a new musical language without boundaries. For this show, the Trio is joined by special guest Cameron Sharif, keyboard. Cuong Vu is chair of Jazz Studies, and Ted Poor is an artist-in-residence at the UW School of Music. More info.

“Cold Empty Terrible”
October 15-26 | Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse
Created in collaboration with and directed by Whit MacLaughlin, artistic director of the OBIE award-winning New Paradise Laboratories, this production is a resuscitation of a theatrical debacle embedded inside Anton Chekhov’s 1896 masterpiece, “The Seagull.” Members of the School of Drama Professional Actor Training Program turn molehill into mountain by devising an original work for the stage that aims to prove that a century of theatrical experimentation must be good for something.
