WOMEN OF INFLUENCE: Two from the UW community have been named “Women of Influence” by the Puget Sound Business Journal. Sheila Edwards Lange, vice president for minority affairs and vice provost for diversity; and Myra Tanita, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, are being honored for their influence in the business world and the community — and as mentors to other women.
Sheila Edwards Lange
As the UWs chief diversity officer, Edwards Lange works to improve recruitment and retention of diverse students, faculty, and staff on campus. She has helped develop creative faculty recruitment initiatives and has been active in mentoring students, especially in science, engineering, and mathematics. Edwards Lange is a charter member of the National Association of Chief Diversity Officers and past-president of the Women in Engineering and Program Advocates Network. Her civic and community engagement includes serving on the boards of One World Now! and the Seattle Art Museum, and membership in many other local organizations.
Myra Tanita
In addition to her major role in the administration of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Tanita serves on the boards of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research. She also serves on the boards of the Asian Counseling Referral Service and the Seattle Parks Foundation.
Edwards Lange and Tanita are among 15 local leaders who will be honored at a special event to be held Wednesday, Nov. 16. A panel of judges selected the honorees from nearly 170 nominations. A full list of the Women of Influence is available online.
