Expertise: Waves, wave hazards in the Arctic Ocean, tidal and wave energy
Jim Thomson, who is also a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the UW, studies waves and turbulence at the surface of the ocean surface, including interactions with sea ice. His work emphasizes field measurements and physical processes and includes developing instrumentation and autonomous platforms to measure and harness energy from ocean waves and tides.
