14 UW professors elected to the Washington State Academy of Sciences in 2018
Fourteen scientists, physicians and engineers from the University of Washington have been elected this year to the Washington State Academy of Sciences. According to a statement released July 13 by the organization, the new members were selected for “their outstanding record of scientific achievement and willingness to work on behalf of the academy in bringing the best available science to bear on issues within the state of Washington.”
In all, UW professors make up nearly half of the 29 new members, who will be formally inducted in September during an annual meeting at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
Elected by current members of the Washington State Academy of Sciences:
- Michael B. Bragg, dean of the College of Engineering, professor of aeronautics and astronautics
- Dimitri A. Christakis, professor of pediatrics
- David S. Ginger, professor of chemistry
- J. David Hawkins, professor emeritus of social work
- Suzie Pun, professor of bioengineering
- Brian E. Saelens, professor of pediatrics and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences
- Daniel Schindler, professor of aquatic and fishery sciences
- Hilaire Thompson, professor of biobehavioral nursing and health informatics
Additionally, five UW researchers were elected to the state academy by virtue of their election into the United States National Academies:
- Michael Bevan, professor emeritus of immunology
- Benjamin Hall, professor emeritus of biology
- Daniel Masys, affiliate professor of biomedical and health informatics
- Lynne Riddiford, professor emeritus of biology
- Jane Sisk, affiliate professor of pharmacy
And, one UW faculty member was re-elected by state academy membership to be the board treasurer:
- Cathryn Booth-LaForce, professor of family and child nursing
Incorporated by legislation in 2007, the Washington State Academy of Sciences initially had just 105 members. With this new crop of members from UW and other institutions around the state, the academy’s total membership will rise to 286. The academy’s mission is “to provide expert scientific and engineering analysis to inform public policymaking in Washington, and to increase the role and visibility of science in the state.”
