University of Washington among Peace Corps’ top 5 volunteer-producing schools in 2019
The Peace Corps today announced that the University of Washington ranked No. 5 among large schools on the agency’s list of top volunteer-producing colleges and universities in 2019. There currently are 62 UW alumni volunteering in countries around the world.
In the Top 5 for at least the last 15 years, Huskies have shown their commitment to helping people in interested countries meet their need for trained men and women. The UW tops a list of nine Washington state schools sending volunteers.
“We have seen time and again that the colleges and universities that produce the most Peace Corps volunteers focus on cultivating global citizens in addition to promoting scholarship,” said Peace Corps Director Jody Olsen. “I am proud that so many graduates of these esteemed institutions leverage their educations to make the world a better place. They bring critical skills to communities around the world and gain hands-on, life-changing experience along the way.”
Since the Peace Corps’ founding in 1961, more than 3,040 UW alumni have served abroad as volunteers making the Seattle school the No. 3 producing university overall since the program began. In 2018, Washington state ranked No. 8 among states with the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers, and nearly 10,000 Washingtonians have served since 1961.
The Peace Corps ranks its top volunteer-producing colleges and universities annually according to the size of the student body.
