UW Regents approve five-year contract extension for President Ana Mari Cauce
The University of Washington Board of Regents this week approved a five-year contract extension for President Ana Mari Cauce. The agreement was finalized under authority previously delegated to the board chair.
Cauce received a 2.5% increase for the final year of her current contract, bringing her current base salary to $766,140.
With the five-year extension, Cauce’s annual salary effective at the conclusion of her current agreement one year from now will be $842,760, with an additional $250,000 in deferred compensation annually. She will also receive a roughly $25,000 contribution yearly to a retirement account, with the limit set by the IRS. The package includes a $12,000 annual automobile allowance. Total compensation, including deferred funds, is $1,129,760.
Cauce became interim president on March 2, 2015, and was named to the position on Oct. 13 of that same year. The new contract will keep her in the role through at least 2025.
“The leadership that President Cauce has shown over the course of her first four years in this role speaks for itself, and I’m delighted to represent the Board in recognizing her for it,” said Joel Benoliel, chair of the UW Board of Regents. “This is a fair contract, and one that we should all be proud of as it relates to gender and racial equity among university leaders across the country. As the leader of one of the world’s great and highly respected universities, President Cauce deserves our thanks and appreciation.”
“I am very gratified by the confidence the Regents have expressed in me,” Cauce said. “I will continue to work hard to serve the faculty, staff and students of this university I love, as well as the citizens of our state. This is a great privilege and a great responsibility.”
Cauce has been returning about $100,000 of her deferred compensation back to the UW each year since her presidential appointment began and she plans to continue giving back.
