Arts Roundup: Films, records, art — and the School of Drama’s new season
The UW School of Drama has announced its season for the 2012-2013 school year.
The new school year is still a few weeks away and already the arts calendar is filling with cool events, from record appreciation at the Henry Art Gallery to moth appreciation at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture.
The films of Milos Forman, through Oct. 2. The Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies is supporting a film series on Tuesdays in September honoring the work of Czech-American director Milos Forman. These films are showing at the Seattle International Film Festival Center and Seattle Center’s Northwest rooms. Tickets are $10, $5 for festival members and $9 for youth 20 and under. Sept. 4: “The Loves of a Blonde”; Sept. 11: “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”; Sept. 18: “Amadeus”; Sept. 25: “Man on the Moon”; Oct. 2: “Goya’s Ghosts.” Learn more online.
Events at the Burke Museum:
- Burke Trivia Night 8 p.m. Sept. 6. Natural science meets beer in this monthly event at the College Inn, 4006 University Way NE. Teams are limited to six players and the cost is $5 per team. For 21 and up. Also, though Burke admission is free to faculty and staff all the time, it’s free for everybody the first Thursday of each month.
- “Amazing Moths!” 7 p.m. Sept. 13. The Pacific Northwest is home to thousands of moth species. Hear stories about these amazing creatures from Merrill Peterson, professor of biology at Western Washington University, and one of the architects of the recently launched website, Pacific Northwest Moths.
- Also: The International Conservation Photography Awards exhibit runs through Nov. 25.
The Henry Art Gallery will hold an evening of record appreciation with writer/performer Rachel Kessler on Sept. 13.
Record Appreciation with Rachel Kessler, 6-8 p.m., Sept. 13. Inspired by the exhibition The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl, the Henry Art Gallery invited several artists to host casual listening parties to explore the role of vinyl records in contemporary art practice and how vinyl has affected their work both physically and conceptually. Kessler is a longtime writer, performer and artist, is a founding member of The Typing Explosion and the Vis-à-Vis Society. In the lobby, free with museum admission.

- “Gary Hill: glossodelic attractors” runs through Sept. 16 in the Stroum Gallery.
- “In Ruin: Architectural Photographs from the Permanent Collection” runs through Sept. 30 in the North Galleries.

One-act plays by Tennessee Williams, directed by Tina Polzin and Leah Adcock-Starr, May 29-June 9, 2013.
“Beyond” the main stage:
“Why live? The Value of Live Performance in a Digital Age,” Oct. 2, 16, 30. A lecture series at the Jones Playhouse. Lecturers include School of Drama professors Odai Johnson and Herbert Blau.
Novel Workshop Series, with Book-It Repertory Theatre, Jan. 17-20, 2013, Meany Studio Theatre.
Faculty Dance Concert, featuring the dance, music and drama programs, Jan. 18-19, 2013, Meany Hall.
