UW among best universities in the world for interdisciplinary science
The University of Washington was ranked No. 15 in the world for interdisciplinary scientific research, according to a new list published earlier this month by the U.K.-based Times Higher Education. The UW placed in the top 10 among U.S. institutions. Among U.S. public institutions, the UW placed fifth.
The top three institutions overall were Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and National University of Singapore.
Times Higher Education said that interdisciplinary science refers to the integration of the knowledge, traditions and processes from multiple scientific disciplines. It can involve multiple academics who collaborate with one another across different disciplines. It may also be a single academic researcher approaching a scientific question across multiple disciplines.
The Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, launched in association with Schmidt Science Fellows, is the first effort of its kind to measure universities’ contributions and commitment to interdisciplinary science, according to Times Higher Education.
The analysis includes 11 carefully calibrated performance indicators to assess institutions across three key areas, each representing a stage in the life cycle of research projects: inputs (funding); process (measures of success, facilities, administrative support and promotion); and outputs (publications, research quality and reputation). The ranking’s full methodology can be found here.
Times Higher Education previously ranked the UW as No. 25 in the world, fourth among U.S. public institutions.
