The University of Washington is No. 7 in the world on a list of the top universities in the world powering global innovation, according to the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate. The list is part of a study published Jan. 30 by Clarivate, an analytics company.
The UW placed second among U.S. public institutions, trailing the University of California, Berkeley, which placed fourth overall, according to Clarivate. Harvard University, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology top the list, in that order.
To conduct the study, Clarivate analyzed the role of research in shaping global industrial innovation and societal impact, using data and expert insights derived from academic research and patent citations. The study identified the top 50 universities named on the academic papers that received the highest number of citations from patents granted to the companies and organizations on the Top 100 Global Innovators 2024 list. Clarivate said the report highlights how knowledge flows between academia and industry across countries and regions, underscoring the global nature of innovation.
Two European universities, Université Paris Cité and University of Cambridge, placed fifth and sixth. The University of California, San Diego, the University of Michigan and the University of Toronto rounded out the top ten.
